Boots

I spent a week living out my fables and I forgot my name
Took out my teeth as an un-thanked favor but I forgot my pain
I take my meals on an off-white placemat and put myself to bed
I watch the clock with an old time vengeance
And when it runs out I’m gonna make it out my head
Across the coast with their eyes rolled backwards they say the end is near
They place their bets on the ever-after, but all my chips are here
I’ve been the boots and the beat-down doormat, I still don’t know what’s best
At curtain call when the last shoe drops down
They take your money, they take you for what you got left

Snakes
03:12
|
|||
I was heading for the mountains, I was running from my oldest foes
This attack that they've been mounting has got me on my toes
Money moving in and out, there was not a single question posed
Got mixed up in the wrong hands, now someone's asking for my head to roll
This time when the snakes come by, they smile but they're not gun shy
Hide a little bit longer
Oh if you turn me in, I'll tread but I can't quite swim
Hide a little bit longer now
I was phoning to my family, dropping quarters everywhere I go
Something nipping at me heels now, I gotta let you know
Heard a knock on my door, hand outstretched asking what I'm waiting for
Got a blunt knife in the other, you're not gonna hear me call no more
This time when the snakes come by, they smile but they're not gun shy
Hide a little bit longer
Oh if you turn me in, I'll tread but I can't quite swim
Hide a little bit longer now

Ocean
03:31
|
|||
All the cars racing past this couch we laid here in the grass
And I don’t ask why, you’re leaving but you take your time
Upside is always gonna get me high
Come in love, come in hate, let’s bury this another way
The light’s not going dim, you shut your eyes it won’t get in
Upside is always gonna get me down
You were on the island now you’re in the ocean
You were in the picture now you’re in the album
Common sense tells me this is something I can never fix
But I watch like a dog, waiting on a scrap to drop
Upside is always gonna get me high
You were on the island now you’re in the ocean
You were in the picture now you’re in the album
You were on the island now you’re in the ocean
You were in the picture now you’re just the problem

On A Word
03:39
|
|||
What’s lost gets found along the way, even when you lose somebody
But you can’t stay home today
All over town they find a way, even when the light keeps dimming
All of them went out today, everyone got up today
But I don’t care at all
One missed my direction now the other starts to fall
And I won’t go back now on a word
In taking time I traded mine
I can feel the good stuff slipping
Far away from my old world, far away from my design
But I don’t care at all
One missed my direction now the other starts to fall
And I won’t go back now on a word

Tracing
04:14
|

I hug the guardrails on the road sometimes
I skim the sides now, get my racing stripes
I’ll stick the landing or I’ll learn to fly
Took me up so high, nearly lost an eye
No one believes me, what I saw that night
No conversation could explain it right
I turned a corner, saw a great big light
Took a stranger up to the world above
I can see your shape tracing through the air
But when you’re right, you’re really right I’m not getting any higher
It was a trick, it was the light it was something in my mind’s eye
I need a gun, I need a prayer maybe i could see a pastor
But when I talk, it comes out wrong like I’m telling you a lie

My Kind
03:56
|
|||
Sometime last spring I'm talking to a friend
Shadows mark time, we leave the porch and go for a drive
Pull over take a walk through the vines
This time last year I saw her everyday
He says unfazed, I never see a lump in his throat
He carries all the boulders he knows
Asks me what's new (I'm barely getting through)
I saw the job gets tiresome but I'm doing fine
Sending wishes back to you and your kind
I drive back home, by now it's getting light
I know it's trite, I'm feeling like the worst of my kind
I'm feeling like the worst of my kind
I do not know why you've got a hold on me
But you got a hold on me
But you got a hold on me
Half of the time this is what I pantomime
Pointing at something alive
Pointing at something alive

Tommygun
03:23
|

Terry talks like a tommygun
But he hits like a morning dove
When I ask what the neighbors did
Laughs and grins like a Christmas kid and says that he knows
Climbed up on a telephone wire
Said the end times are coming
Took a spill, only broke a couple bones
No steady check, he’d love for judgement day to come
I’m packing all my things at once
They say the time is finally here
I’ve got enough for 50 days now
I can’t leave without him, so he’s slumped around my neck
There’s not a car out on the highway
Nobody knows except for me
We beat the rush to the hills now
All the way he’s laughing, points at all the things he sees
Not in my head, but in my heart
I know that’s my Tommygun

Pitter Patter
03:57
|
|||
Am I gonna beat this drum forever
I’m in my way, bound to my polite charade everyday
Never gonna learn that age old lesson
An old time friend told me I’ll be swept away in the end
I’m not gonna leave you now
I said I’m not gonna leave you now
But the tiny pitter patters of my heart, they don’t say why
And you’ve been a gracious host this winter
To let me in
Kept me from the ice and the rain and the wind
And I gotta ask that stupid question
Are you all in
Constant strangers all the time coming in
I’m not gonna leave you now
I said I’m not gonna leave you now
But the tiny pitter patters of my heart, they don’t say why
